Our Services

The Division of Pathology at UI Health has a consultative, educational approach to patient diagnosis and management, while providing state-of-the-art diagnostic testing. We realize the importance of providing meaningful test results and the relevant information necessary for optimal patient management. As a result of active participation in interdepartmental clinical investigations, our laboratories continuously evaluate and develop new test methods and assess their clinical utility. Patient materials required for test development come to us from our hospital and clinics and our expanding Outreach Reference Laboratory enterprise.

Surgical Pathology provides general surgical pathology services of receipt, examination, processing, sectioning, staining, microscopic examination and diagnosis for tissue specimens. Frozen section and intraoperative evaluation of tissue is provided for the operating rooms at the University of Illinois Hospital. Special handling of tissue for treatment protocols is provided, in addition to special handling of tissue for lymphoma, kidney, liver, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, skin, breast, ocular, neural, oral/nasal/laryngeal and soft tissue requiring additional testing for diagnosis and diagnostic services to patients and physicians. Our faculty and staff provide both general tissue diagnosis as well as special testing for tumor and prognostic markers. We are integrated with the molecular pathology and cytogenetics laboratories of UI Health. Special handling of tissue for biobanking and research protocols is provided by the tissue biorepository and/or by special arrangement with surgical pathology.

Cytopathology provides state-of-the-art diagnostic services and an innovative cytopathology curriculum for trainees. We offer a complete range of services, including gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology, high-risk HPV testing (Cervista), FNA biopsy performance, adequacy assessment and interpretation, and consultation. We are always available to discuss test requests and results with submitting physicians. Members of the Division are engaged in research that impacts the clinical practice of cytopathology. We are closely integrated with the Surgical and Clinical Pathology laboratories of UI Health.

Clinical Pathology at UI Health is led by a dynamic group of laboratory physicians and doctoral laboratory scientists who develop the future of diagnostic testing through innovative clinical research. Every member of the Division is committed to patient care and provides much more than just test results. Each member of the Division serves the role of a valued consultant to each patient's managing physician. The Division's expertise is shared not only with the University of Illinois Hospital but also with physicians and medical facilities in 37 states through the UI Health Reference Laboratory System. Clinical Pathology oversees the operation of the Clinical Laboratories for the University of Illinois Hospital to provide state-of-the art laboratory testing in clinical chemistry, hematology, coagulation, hematopathology, molecular pathology, flow cytometry, microbiology, cytogenetics, histocompatibility, andrology, biochemical genetics, and transfusion medicine.
