PET/CT
Computed tomography (CT) imaging combines X-ray images with computer technology to produce detailed images of the body, including skeletal, muscular, and vascular systems. CT imaging provide more detailed images than X-rays, for more precise diagnoses for a variety of medical conditions.
Radiology at UI Health offers a full range of CT procedures, including PET (positron emission tomography), to determine the presence and extent of most cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, and cardiovascular disease.
In PET/CT, nuclear medicine images are superimposed with CT) to produce more precise information and accurate diagnoses. PET is able to detect certain diseases before other imaging modalities by visualizing the metabolic processes occurring in the body.
Common uses for PET/CT include:
- Diagnosing cancers such lung, breast, colorectal, esophageal, head and neck, melanoma, and lymphoma.
- Evaluating lymphoma and breast cancer patients for responses to therapy.
- Patients with certain cardiovascular and neurological conditions.
