Lymphedema Therapy
Lymphedema Management Services
Lymphedema is caused by an abnormality in the lymphatic system that leads to the development of swelling in the tissues of the body. Some people are born with lymphatic systems that are deficient and others acquire it due to medical illness. Any part of the body can be affected by lymphedema, but it is most commonly noted in the arms and legs. Lymphedema can cause discomfort, loss of function, and debility. The earlier that lymphedema is diagnosed the better the outcome of treatment. Although there is no cure for lymphedema, with the appropriate treatment, it can be managed.
The physical therapists in the Department of Rehabilitation Services at the University Of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Hospital) offer a comprehensive approach to the management of lymphedema. The certified lymphedema therapists at UI Hospital combine the principles of complete decongestive therapy along with the needs and goals of the patient to guide the development of an individualized plan to manage the lymphedema. Complete decongestive therapy includes skin care, manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging, and exercise. A primary goal of the lymphedema program at UI Hospital is to empower the patients with the knowledge and skills that they need to manage their lymphedema in their home environment.
