Physical Therapy Wound Care

A difficult healing wound can cause much pain to the patient, further medical complications, and have a major impact on one's quality of life. Major advances have developed in various treatments by all specialties in order to successfully heal and close chronic and various types of difficult healing wounds. Physical therapy can be an adjunct treatment for non-healing wounds when standard wound care is unsuccessful.

Aggressive physical therapy wound care may include the following modalities and procedures: 

  • Electrical stimulation 
  • Ultrasound 
  • Ultraviolet light 
  • Pulsed lavage 
  • Negative pressure wound therapy 
  • Multilayer compression 
  • Sharps debridement 

Some of the most common types of difficult healing wounds we manage include:

  • Venous and/or arterial insufficiency wounds
  • Diabetic wounds
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Difficult healing surgical wounds
  • Many other types of chronic and difficult healing wounds 

Performed will be a comprehensive physical therapy evaluation and treatment plan that will apply to the various factors in the management of wound healing, including but not limited to nutrition, blood flow and circulation, edema, functional mobility, and pressure relief. At the Medical Center there is a collaborative wound care team including wound nurses, wound physicians, orthotic and prosthetic specialists that can be consulted with. Physical Therapy wound care services are available to both the inpatient and hospital-based outpatient settings.

* We are located in the UI Hospital Hospital Room C-100. Our outpatient facility is open Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m
