Physical Therapy Wound Care
A non-healing wound can cause much pain for a patient, further medical complications, and have a major impact on the quality of one's life. Major advances in treatments have developed to successfully heal and close chronic and non-healing wounds. Physical therapy can be an adjunct treatment for non-healing wounds when standard wound care is unsuccessful.
UI Health physical therapists are part of a collaborative wound care team that includes wound care physicians and nurses, and orthotic and prosthetic specialists. Physical therapists with a specialization in wound care will perform a comprehensive physical therapy evaluation, and develop a treatment plan that will apply to the various factors in the management of wound healing, including nutrition, blood flow and circulation, swelling, functional mobility, and pressure relief.
Our wound care team manages many types of difficult and non-healing wounds, including:
- Venous and/or arterial insufficiency wounds
- Diabetic wounds
- Pressure ulcers
- Traumatic wounds
- Surgical wounds
- Chronic wounds
Physical therapy wound care may include the following procedures and treatments:
- Electrical stimulation
- Ultrasound
- Ultraviolet light
- Pulsed lavage
- Negative pressure wound therapy
- Multilayer compression
- Sharps debridement

We are located in the UI Hospital, Room C100. Our outpatient facility is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 312.996.3700 to schedule your first outpatient appointment. A physician's referral is required.
