Acute Care Center
The Acute Care Center at the Univeristy of Illinois Medical Center is an alternative to the typical Emergency Room experience.
Background
Intermittent pain episode known as "pain crisis" is the most common symptom of sickle cell disease adn is poorly managed in both timeliness and appropriateness. Delayed treatment in Emergency Departments, unrelieved pain, frequent admissions, and prolonged hospitalizations are more common.
Studies have shown that with immediate and aggressive intervention, pain crisis can be controlled so that patients can return home rather than be admitted as an inpatient.
If you are experiencing an UNCOMPLICATED pain crises and are unable to manage your pain at home, the Acute Care Treatment Center may be the right choice for you.
To meet the criteria for an UNCOMPLICATED pain crisis and you have:
No chest pain
No shortness of breath

Pain that is different from your typical pain crises
