Travel ClinicTraveling to foreign destinations can present health hazards. Those hazards may he unique to the destination or common to most. An individual's health may also impact the risk of foreign travel. The University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health Travelers Health and Immunization Service evaluates travelers, their destinations and related issues to prepare them for foreign travel. The Service also provides after-trip assessments and treatment recommendations for those returning with travel-related exposures and/or illnesses.

Whether traveling for business, recreation or academic enrichment, the Travelers Service can provide necessary health services for a successful and enjoyable trip.

Katherine Duvall MD, MPH, is the director of the Travelers Health and Immunization Service.  She is on the faculty of the School of Public Health and board-certified in Occupational Medicine. She and her staff provide customized immunization and preventive medical treatment plans to those who plan to travel throughout the world. Dr. Duvall sees travel patients 14 years of age and older.

David Marder MD, MPH is dual certified in Internal and Preventive (Occupational) Medicine. He is the Director of the University Health Services the primary medical service for faculty, staff, and students at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Marder sees travel patients 16 years of age and older.  

Dr. Susan Buchanan, Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Occupational Medicine Residency Program, is dual certified in Family and Preventive Medicine (Occupational).  She practiced primary care for over a decade prior to joining the department, and sees travel patients 12 years and over.

  • A review of the individual's medical history to assess specific risks related to foreign travel.
  • Advice on the safety and health risks associated with specific destinations, based on CDC (Center for Disease Control) and WHO (World Health Organization) recommendations.
  • Tips on avoiding or mitigating common travel illnesses.
  • Administration of required immunizations (including Yellow Fever, where applicable)
  • WHO International Certificate of Vaccinations provided
  • Preventive medications and treatments
  • Evaluation of travelers returning with health issues related to foreign travel
  • Travel health programs for groups and corporations

Depending on requirements and individual patient needs, the following immunizations are offered at the Travelers Health and Immunization Service*:

*To allow for optimal vaccine protection, we recommend appointments to be scheduled four weeks prior to anticipate travel.
