UI Health Celebrates Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM)

This October, UI Health proudly celebrates Disability Employment Awareness Month, recognizing the invaluable contributions of individuals with disabilities in our workforce and reaffirming our commitment to an inclusive, accessible, and equitable workplace.

Disability Employment in Chicago and Illinois:

  • In Chicago, approximately 1 in 10 residents report having a disability, reflecting the diverse needs and contributions within our community.
  • Across Illinois, nearly 750,000 working-age individuals live with disabilities, with employment rates varying depending on the type of disability. Notably, about 64% of those with ambulatory disabilities are not in the workforce, underscoring the need for more accessible employment opportunities.

In honor of this month, we will host a featured event for our hospital staff and employees, titled Employees and Reasonable Accommodations – What You Need to Know. Staff and employees can register for the event by visiting the hospital employee intranet or clicking here.

Peter Berg, ADAC, from the Office of Access and Equity, will give a special presentation on:

  • An overview of employment provisions under the ADA
  • Real-world accommodation examples
  • UI Health's procedures for requesting accommodations

Please join us in celebrating the talents and achievements of our employees living with disabilities. Together, we can foster a workplace where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
