Dr. Matthew S. Marcus specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle. This includes rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, hip labral tears, and Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears. Dr. Marcus strongly believes that educating his patients is of utmost importance. He further feels that a well-informed patient will understand the diagnosis and treatment options better and be able to participate in formulating an effective treatment plan. He believes that non-operative management is often just as effective as surgery, but is highly skilled at recognizing when surgery presents as the better option. He prefers to treat patients in a step-wise manner, starting with the least invasive option. Working with athletes, ranging from weekend warrior to professional and helping them to get back to their pre-injury levels, is of particular interest to him. Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Marcus received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan where he majored in history with a minor in biology. He achieved University Honors in multiple semesters. Returning to New York, he earned his medical degree from the State University of New York at Downstate in Brooklyn, New York. He then completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in Newark, New Jersey, where he was awarded the Resident Teaching Award by a vote of the faculty and residents. During his time at UMDNJ, Dr. Marcus presented research at national meetings and published several articles. After completing his residency, Dr. Marcus did a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. As part of his fellowship, he served as the assistant team physician for the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer and for the University of Chicago Athletic Department. Dr. Marcus is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
