Statement Regarding 501(C)3 Tax Exempt Status
Mile Square Health Center is part of the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, all of which are part of The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois is the legal name of the University of Illinois System. The system is a body corporate and politic of the State of Illinois, created by statute in 1867. The organizing statute is now codified at 110 Illinois Compiled Statutes (ILCS) 305, known as the University of Illinois Act.
Federal Taxes
The University of Illinois System is an instrumentality of the State of Illinois and, as such, its income is exempt from federal income tax under the provisions of Internal Revenue Code (IRC) §115. In addition, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has recognized the system as exempt from federal income tax as an organization described in IRC §501(c)(3) and as a public charity of the type described in IRC §§ 509(a)(1) and 170(b)(1)(A)(ii).
Mile Square Health Center is a Health Center Program grantee under 42 U.S.C. 254b, and a deemed Public Health Service employee under 42 U.S.C. 233(g)-(n). This health center receives HHS funding and has federal Public Health Service deemed status with respect to certain health or health-related claims, including medical malpractice claims, for itself and its covered individuals.
