Community Maternal Health Care Program
Addressing the Black Maternal Mortality Crisis
The MSHC Research Team is dedicated to supporting initiatives that directly address our community's needs. One such project is the Community Maternal Health Care (CMHC) program, which aims to improve maternal health outcomes for Black women in Chicago's Southside neighborhoods.
The Challenge
Over the past five years, access to essential maternal and infant care services on Chicago’s Southside has drastically decreased, creating a “maternal healthcare desert.” This has resulted in disproportionately negative health outcomes for Black women and their families.
How This Program Helps
The CMHC program offers a community-based, culturally adapted model of care, providing:
- Holistic Services: Midwifery, nutrition counseling, case management, and doula support.
- Prenatal and Postpartum Care: Addressing needs throughout pregnancy and after childbirth.
- Referral Services: Connecting patients with dental and behavioral healthcare.
- Community Resources: Educational baby showers offering essential supplies and connecting mothers to local resources.
Making a Difference
Currently operating in Auburn-Gresham, the program will soon expand to South Shore and Englewood clinics throughout 2024. Led by Karie E. Stewart, CNM, and operating within the framework of the Gloria Elam Women’s Health Institute of Excellence, CMHC provides comprehensive care in one location, empowering Black women to fight the ongoing Black maternal mortality crisis in Chicago.
