English and Spanish Community Forums Encourage People to Sign up for Health Insurance

National Latino Education InstituteUI Health, in collaboration with the National Latino Education Institute and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrants and Rights and Refugees, hosted two community forums to educate the community on the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The forums held March 18th and 19th, were conducted in English and Spanish. 

The Spanish Forum, "La Nueva Ley de Salud y Como Afecta Apartir del 2014," was moderated by Enrique Garcia Fuentes, Televisa TV, and the panelists included: Teresa Garcia, Health Care Program Specialist, Financial Case Management, UI Health, and Luvia Quiñones, Director, Health Access Initiatives, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. 25 Individuals attended.  Azteca TV interviewed Teresa Garcia regarding the upcoming March 31 deadline and penalties for not enrolling.  UI Health also provided information regarding our Mile Square Health Centers.

The English Forum, "Affordable Care Act, New Health Care Law," had two speakers: Luis Soto, Certified Application Counselor, UI Health and Jaime Van Wagtendonk, Health Care Organizer and Trainer.  Sixty people, from students of NLEI Institute to community participants, attended this session with 30 minutes of presentation and over an hour of questions from the public.  UI Health also provided an information table with Affordable Care Act Checklists for enrollment, appointments with our Certified Application Counselors were made, and several people asked questions regarding our dental and ophthalmology clinics, as well as information on our Mile Square Health Centers.
