UI Health recently celebrated performing its 100th outpatient robotic surgery at its new Specialty Care Building & Outpatient Surgery Center (SCB).

The milestone procedure took place March 20, just six months since the SCB opened on UI Health’s campus in the Illinois Medical District.

“The Specialty Care Building has made some tremendous strides with case volumes, especially with our use of robotics,” said Laura Hennum, associate chief ambulatory operations officer at UI Health. “We’re proud to make this unique service available to our patients and communities, and we look forward to achieving more surgical milestones in our future.”

What to expect for your outpatient surgery at UI Health

UI Health is one of the only hospitals in the Chicagoland area to perform robotic surgery in an outpatient setting. The same-day, minimally invasive robotic procedures don’t require an overnight hospital stay, so patients can recover at home and get back to their routines sooner.

The surgical teams at UI Health perform both general robotic outpatient procedures and outpatient robotic urologic surgical procedures using traditional robotic-assisted surgery and single-incision, or single-port, robotic surgery. Procedures include:

  • Hernia repair (herniorrhaphy)
  • Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal)
  • Prostatectomy (prostate removal)
  • Nephrectomy (kidney removal)
  • Complex urologic procedures, such as pyeloplasty and ureter reimplantation
