UIHealth Adopts Next-Generation Digital Mammography CAD Platform Integrated With Objective Volumetric Breast Density Assessment Platform

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

UI Health today announced the availability of the PowerLook Advanced Mammography Platform (AMP)TM, a next generation, digital mammography with Volpara Density Software Platform, an FDA cleared technologic advancement to provide both volumetric breast density measurements and a BI-RADS breast density category for every digital mammogram.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, about one in eight women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. The Volpara Volumetric Breast Density assessment software identifies women who may be at greater risk for breast cancer based on extreme density of the breast tissue and could benefit from screening modalities in addition to routine mammography. This software along with the Computer Aided Detection system (PowerLook AMP) provides radiologists with the ability to better identify areas of concern in a mammography image, enabling them to efficiently detect cancer and determine the best course of action for the patient.

PowerLook AMP is the first product of its kind to integrate Mātakina's Volpara® Volumetric Breast Density assessment software. Dense breast tissue has not only been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, it also decreases the sensitivity of the mammogram and thereby may impact early detection. Volpara helps radiologists assess breast density more consistently, allowing them to identify women who might benefit from additional screening. Being able to diagnose dense breast tissue at the time of a mammogram also allows the patient to proceed with additional diagnostic testing immediately, rather than being called back for additional appointments.

"At UI Health we are committed to using the most advanced screening technologies that aid in the early detection of cancer," said Kelly Roberts, MD, assistant professor of radiology, University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System. "The availability of PowerLook AMP with Volpara volumetric breast assessment software in our center will enable radiologists to consistently identify women with extremely dense breasts who may benefit from additional screening tests based on breast cancer risk assessment. Early detection of breast cancer can save lives and therefore we are excited to offer these exceptional imaging services to women in our community."

The UI Health Center for Breast Care has been successfully leading the fight against breast cancer and providing patients with renewed hope for over 25 years.. To help raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection, UI Health will host the Chicago Fire vs. Toronto FC game on October 19 in support of Soccer Kicks Cancer, a Major League Soccer (MSL) initiative focused on providing strength and hope in the fight against cancers affecting men, women and children.
