UI Health commemorates Asian Heritage Month

Occasional rain and high winds didn't keep the crowds from attending the Midwest Asian Health Association Health & Resource Fair celebrating Asian Heritage Month and National Hepatitis Awareness Day. Over 500 people attended the event on Saturday in Chinatown.
Dignitaries including UI Health, participated in the Dragon Dance Ceremony with well wishes fed to the colorful red and golden dragon, as the dragon danced to collect envelopes from each dignitary on stage. Dr. Jennifer Marcelo, Pharm.D., Clinical Pharmacist, Faculty & Assistant Director of the UIC Pharmacy Residency Program, gave remarks in English and Sam Ou Yuxiang, Doctor of Pharmacy Candidate 2018 and Asian Pharmacist Association -Hepatitis Chair, gave remarks in Cantonese on behalf of UI Health.
Neurosurgery provided Stroke Education & Body Mass Index screenings, Care Coordination provided UI Health Plus Information and the Pharmacology Team provided medication education and information. UI Health provided information in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English with support from Pharm student volunteers.
The event also included Get Covered Illinois in Person Counselors for special medical insurance enrollment, other health entities, health screenings and more than 100 cultural performances. The goal was to create awareness and elimination of hepatitis B, as a major disease for Asian Americans and general health awareness.
