Prostate Cancer Treatment

Receiving a prostate cancer diagnosis may feel overwhelming. However, it is our goal to ease your concerns and meet your individual needs with a personalized treatment plan that provides the best outcome possible.

Each personalized treatment option depends on the stage and risk of the cancer.

Medicine
Active surveillance or watchful waiting may be suggested for some patients depending on their diagnosis. Hormone Therapy or Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) may be indicated in conjunction with other therapies. ADT may be used before, during, or after other treatments in order to suppress the hormones that cause prostate cancer cells to grow.

Immune Therapy
Immunotherapy is treatment that uses specific parts of the immune system to fight cancer. Immunotherapy allows the immune system to recognize, target, and eliminate cancer cells, wherever they are located in the body.

Surgery
Our team of expert surgeons are highly skilled in minimally invasive prostate cancer surgery using state-of-the-art robotic surgery options, that can offer patients the following:

  • Shorter recovery times
  • Less blood loss
  • Less pain
  • Better nerve-sparing (allowing for improved erections and continence).

Types of Surgery

Robotic-Assisted Prostatectomy
Surgical removal of the cancerous prostate and surrounding tissues using minimally invasive techniques. UI Health was one of the first ten hospitals worldwide to acquire the DaVinci SP robot which reduces the number of incisions and improves quality outcomes. This technology allows superior surgeon vision in order to preserve the erectile nerves.

Radical Prostatectomy
A radical prostatectomy is an operation where the surgery team takes out the entire prostate, seminal vesicles, and sometimes other tissue. It is usually used when the tumor seems to have not grown outside the prostate. Less often, it is used when the tumor has grown outside the prostate but not into other organs.

Radiation
Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment option for many men with prostate cancer. Radiation therapy is a treatment option that uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and stop new cancer cells from appearing.

Types of Radiation Therapy Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy with Calypso fiducial motion tracking

Brachytherapy
Internal radiation therapy where Prostate Seed Implantation allows for targeting the cancer.
