Adult Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital heart disease is an abnormality in the structure of the heart or blood vessels that occur before birth. Advances in surgical treatment have enabled most babies with severe congenital diseases to survive well into adulthood. However, many adults with congenital heart disease may not be getting the proper follow-up care they need. A person who had a congenital heart defect repaired as an infant will still need care as an adult.

At UI Health, we offer educational resources and counseling in addition to your medical treatment to help you manage your condition and live a productive life. We have a dedicated team of healthcare providers with specialized training in caring for adult patients with congenital heart defects, including:

  • Atrial and ventricular septal defects
  • Congenital valve defects
  • Ebstein anomaly
  • Eisenmenger syndrome
  • Marfan syndrome
  • Pulmonary stenosis
  • Single ventricle lesions, including patients with a Fontan procedure
  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Transposition of the great arteries
  • Tricuspid atresia
