Acne
Acne affects more than 90% of people at some point during their lives, making it one of the most common skin conditions. Our board-certified dermatologists and specialists in the department of dermatology have decades of experience in diagnosing and treating acne.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is caused by hormones, bacteria, overproduction of oil, and slower skin cell turnover clogging the skin’s pores. Other factors such as stress and emotions can also cause acne breakouts.
Acne Symptoms
All skin types are susceptible to developing acne. Acne can appear on the skin in various types of blemishes which can include:
- Blackheads
- Whiteheads
- Papules – raised red bumps
- Nodules – larger, typically painful bumps on the skin
- Pustules
Diagnosis & Treatment
Acne can usually be diagnosed during an office visit upon physical examination and discussing the patients’ medical history. Our team is trained in the treatment of acne and will work with the patient to determine the best treatment type to meet their specific needs. Treatment may include one or a combination of the following:
Prescription Medications
- Topical Medications: Apply to all areas that can get acne, not just on spots. Then put on moisturizer and sunscreen.
- Topical Antibiotics: (such as clindamycin): Remember to also use benzoyl peroxide wash with topical antibiotics to help prevent resistance to antibiotics.
- Topical Retinoids: (such as over-the-counter Adapalene 0.1% (Differin gel) or prescription Tretinoin): Use a small amount (pea-size for face) starting every other night. Then increase to every night as tolerated. Use tretinoin at night because the sun inactivates it.
- Oral Antibiotics: (such as doxycycline): Take with water and food. Protect yourself from the sun. Eat a yogurt or take a probiotic daily (at a different time of day than the antibiotic) to protect your gut health. Do not get pregnant.
- Spironolactone: (for females only): Helps with acne caused by hormones. Stay hydrated and do not get pregnant.
