Medications Safe for Pregnancy

1.10 - MEDICATIONS

There are some medications that are safe to take while you are pregnant.

Cough


Robitussin DM (guaifenesin + dextromethorphan), 2 teaspoons every 4 hours.  Cough drops also may be used.

Sore Throat

Gargle with salt water. Prepare 1 teaspoon of salt in 8 oz. warm water.  Chloraseptic spray or throat lozenges can be used, if needed. If you do not get better within a few days or have a fever, come in to make sure that you do not have an infection.

Stuffy Nose

Run hot water in your sink and inhale the steam for 10 minutes, two to three times a day, or sit in a steamy shower for 15 minutes. For nose congestion, you can take Chlor-Trimeton (chlorpheniramine), 4 mg every 6 hours or use salt water nasal drops. Vicks VapoRub, menthol and Halls drops also can be used for relief. For colds or allergies, you can take Sudafed 30 mg, two tablets. If you have a fever, you can take Tylenol (acetaminophen), regular or extra strength, two tablets every 4-6 hours.  Do not take more than eight tablets in 24 hours. .

Headache

Tylenol, regular or extra strength, two tablets every 4–6 hours.  Do not take more than eight tablets in 24 hours.

Heartburn/Indigestion

You may take Tums (calcium carbonate), two to four tablets every 2 hours, as needed, or Maalox (aluminum hydroxide + magnesium hydroxide), 1 tablespoon after meals and before bedtime.  If this does not provide relief, talk to your provider.

Difficulty sleeping

Tylenol PM (Benadryl with Acetaminophen)
