Adolescent Medical Weight-Loss Program (Nonsurgical)

The Adolescent Medical Weight-Loss Program at UI Health aims to teach young patients how to change their lifestyle to lose weight and live a healthy life. We create a lifelong commitment to eating well, exercising, and living your life in ways that help you maintain wellness through adulthood.

Our medical weight-loss program is for your child if they:

  • Do not want to have bariatric surgery
  • Do not qualify for weight-loss surgery
  • Need to complete a weight-loss program as a prerequisite for surgery

How We Help

Our nonsurgical weight-loss program brings together doctors, nutritionists, exercise physiologists, and psychologists to guide your child to safe and healthy weight loss. During the initial visit, our experts will evaluate your child and develop a plan to manage your child's weight through nutrition education and behavior modification. To ensure the patient’s success, we require family participation in the program. We educate families about establishing realistic goals based on a healthy diet and an active lifestyle so that they can best support the patient.

Our Program

All team members are board-certified adolescent medicine specialists and registered dietitians, and our mission is to empower children and adolescents to make healthier choices and live healthier lifestyles. The program is structured on a comprehensive consulting session, in which we collect information pertaining to the child’s medical history, medication use, behavior patterns, nutritional intake and feeding issues. With this information, we develop specific nutrition plans and health goals that are realistic and achievable. Through counseling and education, we help families make permanent lifestyle changes that improve overall health and manage complications like diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. We offer individual and group sessions, based on availability. The duration of the program depends on the age and condition of the pediatric patient.
