Surgical Date
When the orthodontist feels you are ready for jaw surgery, he/she will first obtain dental models to check if the bite fits properly.
If the orthodontist feels the bite is ready, then they will ask you to make an appointment with the surgeon.
Please bring the dental models with you for the surgeon to review with you.
The surgeon will review the dental models and if they agree, then a surgical date can be given, usually 3 to 4 months after your appointment.
If the surgeon reviews the dental models and feels that the bite is not ready for surgery, then more orthodontics may be needed.
Both the surgeon and the orthodontist need to agree that the patient is ready for surgery before a surgical date will be given.
Jaw surgery is scheduled throughout the year and will need to be coordinated with the patient's school/work/sports schedule. There is typically a waiting list for surgery, and it takes about 5-6 weeks to properly plan for surgery. We will do our best to fit you in, but there is no guarantee that we can fit young adults of school age for the summer or holidays.
After a surgical date is given, there must be NO orthodontic dental adjustments. If the teeth move after the date is given, your surgery will be postponed. The surgeon can't have teeth moving at the time of surgery.
