Appointments after Surgery

The appointments after jaw surgery are as important as the surgery itself.

The first 6-8 weeks are the most important appointments to keep to maintain the new bite.  

2 weeks after Surgery:

  • Dental elastics are put on if they were not at time of surgery to guide the bite 
  • Oral and nasal care 
  • Appointment with psychologist and other members of the team 

4 weeks after Surgery:

  • Dental elastics are changed to adjust the bite 
  • Instructions on maximizing mouth opening 
  • Appointment with the orthodontist 

6 weeks after Surgery:

  • Photographs and x-rays (CBCT) 
  • Final check by the surgeon and then return fully to the orthodontist to finalize the bite 
  • Appointment with psychologist and other members of the team 

3 months after Surgery

  • Speech assessment 

6 months after Surgery

  • Discussion about removal of plates used to fix the bone 

1 year after Surgery

  • Further surgery if needed 

2 years after Surgery

  • Long term assessment of the outcome of surgery 

3 years after Surgery

  • Long term assessment of the outcome of surgery
