High Risk Surgical and Medical Patients
At UI Health we believe in when barrier appear within our most complex patients, we believe in finding solutions to get them the care they need. In many cases, high-risk patients living with hepatitis C and HIV would not be transplant candidates in other transplant centers. Our transplant program prides itself on research and innovative techniques that can make kidney transplant an option to as many patients as possible.
During the evaluation period, if medical or surgical barriers are found we work with other specialists to find a way to improve a patient's candidacy. Our surgeons are experts in finding solutions for complex patients with infectious disease, such as hepatitis C and HIV. Our nephrologists work closely with infectious disease experts to make kidney transplantation not only possible, but also successful.
We recognize that patients on dialysis have a difficult time exercising due to many factors including disease states, frailty, and fatigue. UI Health offers a Muscle Therapy Program designed for potential transplant candidates who are on dialysis. This program is specifically tailored for dialysis patients to decrease frailty that can subsequently make a stronger, better transplant candidate.
