Karen Woodard is a nurse practitioner in the Sickle Cell Program at UI Health. Ms. Woodard treats patients in the Acute Care Center who are experiencing a vaso-occlusive crisis, also called a pain crisis. The Sickle Cell Acute Care Center uses multimodal pain-relief strategies to manage sickle cell pain, including heat, massage chairs, fluids, and medications. Her special interests include patient education and empowering patients to help them manage and prevent sickle cell crises.
