Mile Square Health Center's 9th cohort of dental assistants.

Mile Square Health Center recently celebrated the graduation of its 9th cohort of dental assistants — the latest class to complete one of Chicago's most distinctive workforce training programs.

Launched in 2022, the Dental Assistant Certification Program was built on a straightforward premise: connect Chicago residents to stable healthcare careers while expanding access to oral health services in communities where both have historically been in short supply. Nearly 60 graduates later, that premise continues to hold.

A Program in Demand

This cohort drew more than 400 applications — the highest volume the program has seen, reflecting steady growth in community awareness and interest over time. Eleven candidates were selected, completed training, and earned their certificates.

The program consists of 142 hours of instruction — 32 hours of lectures, 70 hours of lab and hands-on training, and 40 hours of externship — after which students sit for their certification exams. While comparable programs elsewhere can cost up to $11,000, Mile Square charges students just $300 for textbooks and uniforms, made possible through funding from the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) and the Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation.

Training takes place in Mile Square's clinic at the Auburn Gresham Healthy Lifestyle Hub, where students learn on up-to-date technology including digital imaging and electronic records, and are prepared to assist with medically complex cases, pediatric services, oral surgery, and prosthetic services.

From Training to Employment

Approximately three weeks before graduation, Mile Square hosted a job fair, bringing dental hiring managers from across the region directly to graduates. To date, program alumni have collectively earned close to $2 million in wages — a tangible measure of the program's economic impact on participants and their families.

Graduates go on to work at Mile Square and neighboring hospitals and health centers, while others use the credential as a stepping stone — pursuing dental hygiene programs and other advanced certifications.

A Legacy Gift

The ceremony was also the occasion for a meaningful contribution to the program: a $25,000 gift from the Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation, presented in honor of the Bob Egan Legacy Fund. Bob Egan dedicated himself to promoting oral health in Illinois, and the gift will help ensure that legacy lives on through the work of future graduates.

  • Alderman Heather Higgins, CEO, Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation
  • Deputy Mayor Jonah Anderson, City of Chicago

The celebration also included a thoughtful gesture from Cheryl Parker.

Rooted in the Community

Dr. Karriem Watson

The CHA partnership has been central to how this program reaches the people it was designed to serve. By recruiting directly from CHA communities, Mile Square has created a clear, accessible pathway for residents into healthcare careers — and provided financial support to help make participation possible. A significant share of students come from the same neighborhoods where Mile Square's clinics operate, reflecting the program's belief that healthcare outcomes improve when providers reflect the communities they serve.

Dr. Etminan, who established and leads the program, began her own career as a dental assistant before going on to dental school — a path she hopes more graduates will consider.

Congratulations to the Class of Cohort 9!
