Gastroenterology and Digestive Diseases
The Department of Gastroenterology and Digestive Diseases at the University Of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System is staffed by physicians and scientists who specialize in diseases of the liver and gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, gallbladder, pancreas, small and large intestine (colon) and rectum. Patients here benefit from the latest advancements in diagnosis and treatment.
We see patients with heartburn, reflux, irritable bowel, swallowing disorders, chronic diarrhea, rectal incontinence and inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Using in-depth personal interviews, family history, physical examination, state-of-the-art screenings and therapeutic intervention, we focus on the diagnosis and treatment of colon and rectal disorders, including the early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer.
The Digestive Diseases and Nutrition Clinic features an integrated team of physicians, radiologists, nurses, nutritionists and speech therapists focusing on the underlying cause, diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders and esophageal motility problems.
Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology
We have an interdisciplinary approach to the diagnosis of cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver and colon (GI cancers) by gastroenterologists, radiologists and surgeons. Additionally, our Familial Gastrointestinal Cancer Unit provides comprehensive state-of-the-art care for all members of families that have a high risk for developing gastrointestinal or related cancers because of an inherited predisposition.
Our physicians are experts in non-surgical and minimal-surgery approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of gallstones, biliary strictures, tumors and pancreatitis. We offer the latest technology and most advanced practitioners of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) supported by one of the best therapeutic radiology groups in the United States.
Many of our patients come to us with multiple and complex needs. Our team approach to diagnosis and treatment provides the best comprehensive care in the city. Once admitted to the hospital, the nursing team works in tandem with the patient's doctors and team to assure that the digestive disease is being treated in a complete manner.
