Dr. Nadim Mahmud is a Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology, at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He has more than 30 years of experience in hematopoietic stem cell biology and stem cell transplantation. His work includes extensive studies on hematopoietic stem cell biology and blood cell regeneration in both human and animal models, including investigations of bone marrow failure following myeloablative radiation or chemotherapy.
Dr. Mahmud has a broad background in clinical medicine, stem cell biology, and transplantation, and he currently serves as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on several university- and NIH-funded grants. He is also the Director of the Clinical Stem Cell Laboratory within the UI Blood & Marrow Transplant Program. His clinical laboratory is responsible for processing, storing, characterizing, and releasing hematopoietic stem cell grafts for patients undergoing stem cell transplantation and other cell-based immunotherapies.
Dr. Mahmud's laboratory has pioneered a novel method to increase the number of transplantable, blood-forming stem cells in umbilical cord blood grafts by using chromatin-modifying agents, a breakthrough for which he has been awarded a U.S. patent. He is a recognized expert in standards and accreditation for stem cell transplantation and human cord blood banking. He currently serves on the FACT Board of Directors and is a member of the FACT Executive Committee. In addition, he is an Associate Editor for the journal Cytotherapy.
