UI Health Named 2026 LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader

UI Health has been recognized as an “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader” by the Human Rights Campaign’s 2026 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). The Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) is a biennial survey that evaluates health systems in key criteria for non-discrimination policies and practices.
The HEI evaluates and scores healthcare facilities on detailed criteria under five central pillars:
- Non-discrimination and staff training (40 points)
- Patient services and support (30 points)
- Employee benefits and policies (20 points)
- Patient and community engagement (10 points)
- Responsible citizenship (0 deductions)
This is the 10th year UI Health has been recognized by the HEI program.
The exceptional progress reflected in the 2026 HEI includes:ann
- 100% of the facilities had a fully inclusive LGBTQ+ patient non-discrimination policy.
- 98% of HEI participants had staff training in LGBTQ+ patient-centered care.
- 86% of participating facilities have a plan for reducing health disparities and increasing health equity among all patients that is inclusive of LGBTQ+ patients.
- 76% of participants offer equal health coverage for medically necessary care to gender-diverse employees and eligible dependents.
- 67% of participating facilities collaborate with LGBTQ+ organizations or community members to assess the needs of the LGBTQ+ community.
