UI Health Named a Top Hospital for VBAC Deliveries

Friday, February 18, 2022

UI Health was named among the top choices for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) by BirthGuide Chicago, a local childbirth resource.

Citing Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) data for VBAC rates and volumes, Birthguide ranked UI Health the No. 4 hospital for VBAC in Chicago.

During the reporting period — Oct. 1, 2019, through Sept. 30, 2020 — UI Health had a successful, uncomplicated VBAC rate of 30.6%, up more than 20% over the previous period. More than 90 mothers who previously had given birth via C-section gave birth vaginally.

UI Health was recognized for its progress in supporting "trial of labor after cesarean" (TOLAC). Though repeat cesareans are common, they are not the only option. The American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists recommends that women be counseled about TOLAC, and the American College of Nurse Midwives also encourages VBAC consideration.

Further, Birthguide noted the UI Health for offering midwife-attended VBAC.
