Map of closures and detours
Phase 1 road closures and detours.

A major construction project to calm traffic flow and improve pedestrian safety on the UI Health campus will begin Feb. 2.

The multi-phase project will add a new traffic signal at the intersection of Wood and Taylor Streets and several raised pedestrian crosswalks across UI Health’s footprint in the Illinois Medical District. The project is anticipated to be complete in the summer of 2026. Throughout the project, there will be several road and sidewalk closures, detours, and traffic diversions and detours. Traffic personnel and signage will help to direct motorists and pedestrian traffic around the University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics campus.

The first phase, beginning Feb. 2 and expected to last seven weeks, will require the closure of sidewalks and traffic lanes on Wood Street between Roosevelt Road and Taylor Street.

During the first half of this phase:

  • Vehicle traffic on Wood Street will be restricted to southbound traffic.
    • Northbound traffic on Wood Street from Roosevelt Road will be open to Grenshaw Street to allow access to the Wood Street Parking Structure.
  • On Fillmore Street, only westbound traffic will be allowed. (Eastbound traffic toward Wood Street will be restricted.)
  • The sidewalk on the west side of Wood Street will be closed.
    • A temporary crosswalk from the Wood Street Parking Structure to the east side of Wood Street will allow northbound pedestrian access to the Specialty Care Building and the hospital.

During the second half of this phase, the sidewalk on the west side of Wood Street will be reopened and the sidewalk on the east side of Wood Street will be closed. Throughout the construction period, a flagger will be present, and detour signage will be posted at key access points.

UI Health will continually provide updates on the project status and changes to campus traffic, including impacts on access to parking facilities. Clinics and the Call Center will provide updates to patients with appointments scheduled during the project, and updates also will be provided to patients via MyChart.

The UIC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services also will maintain construction updates throughout the project at GrenshawnGarage.com.
