Filipino American History Month: History, Culture, Community, and Health

This Filipino American History Month, UI Health invites staff to explore Filipino American history, culture, community experiences, and health through a virtual educational program focused on greater understanding, cultural awareness, and culturally responsive care.

Filipino Americans have made significant contributions across healthcare, public service, education, business, culture, and community life. At the same time, experiences within Filipino American communities can vary across generations, migration histories, family structures, cultural identities, and levels of familiarity with U.S. institutions and healthcare systems.

This event will provide an opportunity to learn more about the historical, cultural, and social factors that have shaped Filipino American communities in the United States while considering how these experiences may influence health, healthcare access, wellbeing, and interactions with healthcare organizations.

History, Culture, and Community

Filipino American experiences are shaped by a rich history, strong cultural traditions, family and community relationships, and diverse immigration and generational experiences.

Some individuals and families may maintain close connections to Filipino cultural traditions, languages, and community networks, while others may navigate multiple cultural identities across generations. Migration history, place of birth, family roles, community support, and experiences navigating U.S. systems can all influence how individuals experience identity, belonging, health, and wellbeing.

History, Culture, Community, and Health will feature a virtual presentation focused on Filipino American history and contributions, culture and identity, immigration and intergenerational experiences, health and wellbeing, community resources, and culturally responsive care.

Attendees Will:

• Explore key moments in Filipino American history and the contributions of Filipino Americans
• Learn more about Filipino culture, identity, traditions, and community experiences
• Examine how immigration and intergenerational experiences may shape individuals and families
• Consider cultural, social, economic, and community factors that may influence health and healthcare access
• Learn about the role of community organizations, advocacy, and culturally relevant resources
• Identify practical considerations for supporting Filipino American patients, families, and communities through culturally responsive care

This session will provide participants with a broader understanding of Filipino American history and culture while creating space to consider how community experiences, cultural identity, family relationships, immigration, and social factors may intersect with health and healthcare.

Participants will leave with greater awareness of Filipino American experiences and practical insight into how healthcare professionals and staff can provide more culturally responsive support to Filipino American patients, families, and communities.
