Dr. Thomas L. Sims Jr. practices in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at UI Health. Dr. Sims specializes in the surgical treatment of a number of abdominal and chest problems in children, from birth to adulthood. Having been born with a medical condition that required surgery as a baby and treatment throughout childhood, Dr. Sims understands what it is like for a child and family dealing with one of these problems. His clinical interests include in caring for children with birth defects; hernias; intestinal, lung and esophagus issues; and traumatic injuries. He focuses on patient and family education, as he believes family input and involvement is important in the care of each patient. He is working to build the Global Impact of the Department of Surgery to help improve surgical care in low- and middle-income countries, and he enjoys teaching students and surgical trainees.
