Conditions Treated in the Neuro ICU
The Neuro ICU cares for patients with a wide range of severe and complex neurological conditions, including:
Ischemic Stroke
An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks blood flow to part of the brain, depriving brain tissue of oxygen. Rapid diagnosis and treatment are critical to reducing brain damage and improving recovery outcomes.
Hemorrhagic Stroke
A hemorrhagic stroke happens when there is sudden bleeding in or around the brain. This can happen from a ruptured blood vessel, high blood pressure, a tumor, or other conditions. These strokes require immediate critical care to manage bleeding, pressure, and neurological function.
Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
A subarachnoid hemorrhage is bleeding in the space surrounding the brain, often caused by a ruptured aneurysm. This condition is a medical emergency that requires specialized neurological monitoring and intervention.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
Traumatic brain injuries result from sudden trauma to the head (from falls, accidents, or other major injuries) that affects brain function. Treatment may include close neurological monitoring, surgery, and supportive critical care.
Skull Fractures
Skull fractures are breaks in the bones of the skull that may occur after head trauma. Some fractures may be associated with bleeding, swelling, or brain injury requiring intensive neurological care.
Brain Aneurysms
Brain aneurysms are weakened areas in blood vessels that can bulge or rupture, potentially causing life-threatening bleeding. The Neuro ICU closely monitors and treats patients before and after intervention or surgery.
Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs)
AVMs are abnormal tangles of blood vessels that disrupt normal blood flow in the brain or spinal cord. These conditions can increase the risk of bleeding, seizures, or neurological complications.
Cerebral Edema
Cerebral edema is swelling of the brain caused by injury, stroke, infection, or other neurological conditions. Intensive monitoring and treatment are often necessary to reduce pressure and protect brain function.
Spinal Cord Injuries
Spinal cord injuries can affect movement, sensation, and bodily function depending on the severity and location of the injury. Neuro ICU care focuses on stabilization, prevention of complications, and support of recovery.
Post-Operative Neurosurgical Monitoring
After complex brain or spine surgery, patients may require intensive monitoring to track neurological function and recovery. The Neuro ICU team helps manage pain, swelling, and potential complications following surgery.
Brain Tumor Complications
Brain tumors and related treatments can sometimes cause swelling, seizures, bleeding, or neurological changes. Neuro ICU specialists provide advanced monitoring and supportive care during critical stages of treatment.
Status Epilepticus
Status epilepticus is a serious seizure that is prolonged or several seizures that occur repeatedly and quickly. It requires emergent care to prevent lasting brain injury.
Encephalitis and Meningitis
Encephalitis and meningitis are inflammations of the brain, often caused by infection, that require urgent treatment to prevent further brain injury or swelling.
