Nephrology

The Division of Nephrology at UI Health treats patients with conditions and diseases of the kidney, including end-stage renal disease (ESRD), kidney transplantation, acute kidney failure, kidney stones, and immunological kidney diseases. Our kidney transplant outcomes are among the best in Chicago.

The Division of Nephrology has grown out of a long history of excellence in the field of kidney treatment and research. In the early 1950s, UI Health nephrologists refined and developed the percutaneous kidney biopsy as a clinical tool. UI Health was the first institution in Illinois to perform a living-donor kidney/pancreas transplant and the first in the world to perform a robotic donor nephrectomy (kidney removal) for a living-donor transplant.

Our Services

Dialysis Services
The ESRD Program at UI Health features a 23-chair outpatient dialysis unit, a 9-bed hospital dialysis unit, and dialysis services in local skilled nursing facilities.

Hemodialysis
The patient's blood is pumped through the blood compartment of a dialyzer for cleansing and then returned to the body.

Peritoneal Dialysis
A sterile solution containing minerals and glucose is run through the body to absorb waste products, and then it is drained out through a tube and discarded.

Short Daily Home Dialysis
Daily treatments more closely resemble normal kidney function and are considered by many in the renal community to be a promising alternative to current three-times-a-week dialysis.

Pediatric Nephrology
The Preventive Pediatric Renal Clinic at the Children's Hospital University of Illinois focuses on early intervention for children with kidney diseases with a special focus on conditions that contribute to kidney problems, such as high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus. Services also include dialysis and kidney transplantation. Treatment includes family education on dietary management, exercise, and drug therapy.

Our Approach to Kidney Care

At UI Health, beyond offering a comprehensive scope of diagnostic and treatment options, we also provide patients with access to caregivers who have specialized training related to the kidneys, along with a dialysis center.

At every stage of the process, your care is handled by a team of providers—including physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians—with unique expertise in kidney diseases and disorders.

In addition to their specialty training, these providers remain up to date on the latest techniques and technologies in order to provide patients with optimal treatment options and positive outcomes.
