Supporting Families Through Critical Care

Having a loved one in the Neuro ICU can be stressful, emotional, and uncertain. At UI Health, we recognize that families and caregivers are an important part of the care team. We are committed to providing education, support, and resources to help families navigate the ICU experience.

What Families Should Know About the Neuro ICU

Neurological critical care patients may experience rapid changes in condition, and recovery timelines can vary significantly. Some patients may be awake and responsive, while others may require sedation, ventilator support, or intensive monitoring.

Emotional & Support Services

Critical illness can affect the emotional well-being of both patients and their families. UI Health offers supportive services that may include:

  • Social work support
  • Spiritual care and chaplain services
  • Palliative care consultations
  • Care coordination assistance
  • Rehabilitation planning support
  • Interpreter and language services

Academic Medical Center Environment

As part of an academic health system, patients may encounter physicians in specialty training working alongside experienced attending physicians and senior specialists. This collaborative model supports continuous bedside coverage, advanced expertise, and coordinated patient care.

Advanced Neurocritical Care Technology

The Neuro ICU utilizes advanced technologies and monitoring tools that may include:

  • Continuous brain wave monitoring (EEG)
  • Advanced imaging and diagnostic testing
  • Intracranial pressure monitoring
  • Ventilator and respiratory support
  • Specialized neurological monitoring systems

These technologies help the care team respond quickly to changes in condition while supporting high-quality, patient-centered care.

Research & Innovation

As a leading academic medical center, UI Health participates in research and clinical innovation to advance neurological critical care. Some patients may be eligible for specialized therapies, clinical trials, or emerging treatment approaches when appropriate.

Supporting Family Members & Caregivers

Caring for a loved one in the Neuro ICU can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Families and caregivers are encouraged to care for their own health and well-being throughout the hospitalization process.

Taking breaks, resting, eating regularly, staying connected to support systems, and asking questions when needed can help caregivers better navigate the challenges of critical illness and make informed decisions throughout the patient’s recovery journey.

The Neuro ICU team is committed to supporting not only patients, but also the families and caregivers who play an important role in the healing process.
