Dr. Vijayalakshmi “Viju” Ananthanarayanan is the Director of Anatomic Pathology at UI Health. She is a surgical pathologist (a pathologist who examines tissue biopsies and excisions) with fellowship training in thoracic pathology. Dr. Ananthanarayanan’s clinical interests are cancerous and non-cancerous diseases of the lung and pleura (lining tissue of the lung). These include providing diagnosis and prognostic information on lung cancer, pleural malignancies (mesothelioma), and mediastinal/thymic tumors. She also has a keen clinical interest in non-neoplastic diseases of the lung such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, smoking-related interstitial lung disease, connective tissue disorder-related lung disease, cystic lung diseases, and sarcoidosis. With over 10 years of clinical practice, she also provides expertise in head and neck pathologies, including diagnosing and prognostication of head and neck cancers, oropharyngeal cancers, salivary gland cancers, and thyroid malignancies.
