Blood & Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program

The Blood & Marrow Transplant Program (BMT) at UI Health specializes in a variety of stem cell transplant procedures to provide the best possible outcomes in patients with cancers of the bone marrow, specific solid tumorous cancers, and non-neoplastic blood disorders.

A part of the Division of Hematology & Oncology, our program is nation nationally recognized for innovative research and quality care in the field of stem cell transplantation. Our program is designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Transplants® by Blue Cross and Blue Shield® for demonstrating outstanding quality, expertise and patient outcomes in Adult Blood & Marrow Stem Transplant.

Stem Cell Transplant Treatments

The BMT Program at UI Health provides a number of stem cell transplant procedures to deliver the best possible outcomes in patients with cancers and diseases of the blood. BMT treatments include:

  • Autologous stem cell transplant: Stem cell transplant that uses a patient's own stem cells for transplantation.
  • Allogeneic stem cell transplant: This procedure uses stem cells from a matched related or unrelated donor for transplantation.
  • Haploidentical stem cell transplant: Transplant with stem cells from a half-matched related donor.
  • Umbilical cord stem cell transplant: This stem cell procedures uses partially matched unrelated stem cells from the donor's umbilical cord.
  • CAR T-Cell Therapy: UI Health is an approved treatment site for CAR (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) T-Cell Therapy, an FDA-approved therapy for treating specific types of lymphoma and leukemia in patients who have not responded to previous cancer treatments.

About CAR T-CELL Therapy

UI Health is an approved treatment site for CAR (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) T-Cell Therapy. This is an FDA-approved therapy for treating specific types of lymphoma and leukemia in patients who have not responded to previous cancer treatments. Studies have shown CAR-T cell therapy offers excellent results for people with specific blood cancers where previous treatments didn’t work. CAR-T cell therapy works by attacking and killing cancer in the body by adapting millions of your own immune system cells.

Who Can Receive this Treatment?

CAR-T Cell Therapy is not the same as a stem cell transplant or chemotherapy.

CAR-T therapy may be a treatment option for:

  • Relapsed, refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia
  • Relapsed, refractory B-cell Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Relapsed, refractory mantle cell lymphoma
  • Relapsed, refractory follicular lymphoma
  • Relapsed, refractory multiple myeloma

How it Works

CAR-T therapy works by:

  • Extracting T-cells or white blood cells from your blood
  • Modifying and duplicating T-cells in the lab
  • Reintroducing CAR-T cells back into your body where they will travel throughout the body looking for cancer cells
  • Millions of CAR-T cells detect and kill cancer cells

Most people have a reaction to CAR-T cells that requires them to stay in the hospital for days to weeks for monitoring and management.

Patients referred to the BMT Program are assisted by our pre-transplant nurse coordinators and discussed weekly at our multispecialty meetings. All of our BMT patients meet with our team of BMT physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, in addition to physical therapists and dietitians dedicated to BMT patients.
