Single Port Robotic System

UI Health is the only health system in Chicago and one of the first institutions worldwide to employ the Intuitive da Vinci Single Port (SP) Robotic System for urologic surgical procedures.

The state-of-the-art robotic system requires just a single incision site for minimally invasive urologic procedures, providing surgeons with robotic-assisted technology designed for deep and narrow access to tissue in the body. The SP system allows surgeons to get inside of the body in a very delicate way to perform impactful surgeries that solve problems ranging from cancer to reconstruction. The ability to enter the body through a single, small incision helps surgeons perform procedures in a less invasive way. This helps to reduce trauma and discomfort to the patient.

The Single Port Robot transforms prostate care with its minimally invasive approach, using a single incision to enhance surgical precision and accelerate recovery for improved patient outcomes.

The SP system includes three, multi-jointed, wristed instruments and a fully wristed 3DHD camera - a first in a robotic system. The instruments and the camera all emerge through a single cannula (tube) and provide 360 degrees of anatomical access.

The SP system enables urologic surgeons to operate through one incision with narrow, deep access for a number of urologic surgical procedures, including:

  • Nephrectomy (kidney removal) and partial nephrectomy
  • Prostatectomy (prostate removal)
  • Pyeloplasty/Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) obstruction surgery

The advancement to single-incision robotic surgery means that many of these procedures may be able to performed on an outpatient basis, with patients returning home the same day.
